A propos de DOXA Documentary Film Festival .
Vancouver, BC Canada.
DOXA is a small, non-profit organization based in Vancouver, BC Canada that is devoted to the art of documentary. We screen a wide range of films – from the conventional issue-driven documentaries to films created auteurs and support artist-driven. DOXA is presented by The Documentary Media Society, which was founded in 1998. There’s been a number of highlights over the years, one of which was the retrospective of Claire Simon in 2016, as well as last year’s retrospective of Chris Marker both of which were a part of our French French program.
Highlights of our next edition include the North American premeiere presentation of Alain Cavalier’s beautiful portraits series (which Thierry describes eloquently in his essay found here): https://www.doxafestival.ca/essay-thierry-garrel-certain-art-portrait
Other highlights include our dual spotlight program Quietude and Press Play. The first spotlight Quietude features a brilliant batch of films that are pushing the boundaries of documentary cinema, including Penny Lane’s The Pain of Others, which is constructed entirely using the YouTube confessional footage. This film provides some of the most relevant philosophical questions related to truth, technology and illness. These themes are also present in two other films in our Quietude program this year, including God Straightens Legs (World Premiere), in which director Joelle Walinga crafts a beautiful work of cinematic art centered around her mother’s relationship to God and religious hope as means of combating her breast cancer.
