Dans des films où le filmage est fondamental, ceux qui tiennent la caméra ne peuvent être que les co-auteurs-réalisateurs. Autrement dit, nous sommes en présence d’un exemple de véritable travail créatif collectif comme le cinéma n’en connaitra pas d’autre.
Les noms de Donn Alan Pennebaker, Richard Leacock, Albert et David Maysles ne peuvent être dissociés. Auxquels il faut ajouter Robert Drew qui est le seul à ne pas faire l’image de ses films.
Bien sûr chacun a sa spécialité – la politique pour Drew ou la musique pour Pennebaker – et tous ont aussi réalisé des films individuellement, mais cela n’est pas vraiment déterminant dans le regard historique que nous pouvons porter aujourd’hui sur ces films qui ont tant contribuer à donner au documentaire ses lettres de noblesse.
